Colleen DiIorio, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at Rollins School of Public Health and the Department of Family and Community Nursing in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emory University.  Dr. DiIorio is the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Managing Epilepsy Well Coordinating Center.  She has extensive experience in health promotion research.  Her work covers two broad areas addressing health behavior and behavioral change: adherence/self-management and HIV prevention. In the recently completed NINR funded project on epilepsy (Project E.A.S.E), she researched the role of various antecedents in epilepsy self-management, and in a second NINR funded grant she is examining the use of Motivational Interviewing as an approach to improve adherence to antiretroviral medications (Get Busy Living).  She is currently funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  to develop and pilot test a Web-based epilepsy self-management program called WebEase. Based on this work, Dr. DiIorio has gained considerable expertise in development and evaluation of intervention programs including project management, intervention development, process evaluation, research design and measurement issues, and recruitment and retention issues.  In addition to research, Dr. DiIorio’s clinical background is in neuroscience nursing.  She developed and tested a 6-month internship program for neuroscience nurses and has conducted research on epilepsy self-management for about 15 years. Dr. DiIorio is currently serving on the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation, Georgia, and has served as a reviewer for foundation grant applications.
